Lock Step
Lock Step is the running app for non-runners. Taking away the pressure and uncertainty associated with running, this app was designed to make it effortless to spontaneously start a run and find running partners on the go.
To initiate this project, I documented my everyday leisure activities over the course of 3 weeks. As an amateur runner, I found myself having difficulty fitting my runs into my busy schedule, often having to run at odd hours in the night. This inspired me to develop a solution that makes running feel safe and stress-free, especially for students and busy professionals. This was a multifaceted project, including a high-fidelity UI/UX prototype, a dynamic motion identity, and a sizzle reel.

One major consideration during the process of creating Lock Step was my approach to tone and audience. Unlike most comparable running apps and brands which often focus on pushing athletic boundaries, I wanted to aim Lock Step to appeal to the casual amateur runner.
I interviewed many of my peers who don’t run to hear about the factors that discourage them, and some of the most common responses were that there’s too much social pressure, or “I’m not good enough at it.” These kinds of factors really resonated with me, so I made sure that the app’s homepage de-emphasized comparative factors like distance and speed, placing more focus on the fun, social aspects of running instead. This tone continued to be a major consideration throughout all the stages of the project; factors like typography, color choice, imagery, and motion behavior are all curated to feel bright, friendly, and youthful.
