Motion Design + Branding Volta do Mundo Bambas

I developed a new motion identity and broadcast package for Volta do Mundo Bambas, an international competition for capoeira, a traditional Afro-Brazilian martial art.

In developing this brand identity, I took inspiration from the wide range of rhythmic sweeps, kicks, and other movements present in capoeira, which led to the creation of two primary motion behaviors: a circular rotation and a dodge-like sliding motion. Individual motions are layered and ramped to create a distinct sense of momentum and dynamism through every facet of the new brand identity.

I also took inspiration from various elements of Brazil’s rich visual culture, such as traditional patternmaking and stitching, as well as the vibrant graffiti and street art present throughout Brazil’s urban hubs.

In approaching this new identity for VMB, I focused on pivoting the brand away from its very “sporty” existing brand presence and creating something that feels more vibrant and expressive. I sought to elevate the rhythm, dance, and acrobatics elements that differentiate capoeira from many other martial arts.
